Adapt or Get Left Behind: Why AI Skills Are Essential for the Next Generation of Communicators

As I approach graduation next year with a degree in Journalism–Public Relations from the University of Oregon, I’ve been thinking a lot about the future of our industry—and more importantly, my place in it. One theme keeps coming up in my classes, internships, and jobs: artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how we communicate.

This blog explores that shift. Specifically, how AI is transforming the field of communications and why it’s critical for emerging professionals to understand, adapt, and grow with it.

I chose to focus this blog on AI and communications because, like many students, I’ve spent the last few years learning how to write press releases, build brand strategies, and engage with audiences. But I’ve also realized that AI tools—from ChatGPT to predictive analytics software—are becoming essential parts of that process. If we want to stay competitive in the job market, AI fluency can no longer be optional.

A 2023 Forbes article highlights how AI is already streamlining internal workflows, automating media outreach, and enhancing campaign effectiveness. AI isn’t replacing creativity, but it is streamlining routine tasks so humans have more time to focus on creative, strategic work.

What You Can Expect From This Blog

This blog is for students, young professionals, and anyone in communications looking to understand what AI means for their work and future. I will be touching on:

    • Insights on emerging tools like content generators, trend forecasting platforms, and media monitoring systems.
    • Tips and tutorials on using AI to support your voice as a communicator.
    • Reflections on finding the balance between human storytelling and machine learning.

My goal is to learn as much as I possibly can about AI. I want to be able to confidently say I have gained expereince in all different forms of AI, from chatbots to social media automation to creating images and videos. I want to erase the stigma around AI destroying creativity and being considered “cheating,” because when applied correctly, it is a powerful tool that is changing the communications field for the better. My philosophy with AI is you can either sink or swim. You will sink if you do not have AI literacy in this field. You will swim if you immerse yourself in learning everything you can, because AI is the future.
